Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 72.3 degrees.
The big news yesterday morning was heavy rain and plenty of it. A large swath of thunderstorms moved through East Tennessee before daybreak. Check out these totals:
Powell (Knoxville) 7.10 inches
Clinton and other areas of Knoxville 6+ inches
Townsend Fox Hollow 2.17 inches
Townsend Old Tuckaleechee 1.86 inches
Gatlinburg 2.02 inches
Cherokee North Carolina .51 inches
Cades Cove 1.87 inches
The rain is pretty much over for a few days. It will be hot. High temperatures each day through weekend will be in the low 90’s.
Little River is flowing at 657 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.94 feet on the gauge. Yesterday, the river peaked at 5 feet. Flood stage is 7 feet. Median flow for this date is 123 cfs. The water temperature is 66.0 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 2,420 cfs or 3.95 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 255 cfs. The river peaked at near 9 feet yesterday.
Many streams on the west side of the mountains are flowing high. Others are not, including Tellico River. Streams on the east side of the mountains are flowing lower and fishable.
You will find some high water levels on the west side of the Smokies. The rivers are receding so, over time, you will be able to find suitable water to fish. Some streams in these watersheds that run off quickly may be fishable now.
The lower reaches of Little River and Little Pigeon River are flowing high and unsafe to wade this morning. Other lowland rivers may be fine. Fly fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish may be good in some rivers today.
If you are planning to fish on the lakes today, go early to avoid the bright sun. Fish the dimly lit banks with streamers, foam floating flies, poppers and swimming nymphs. As the sun rises, find shaded banks to fish. When the sun is high and it is hot, I would go home.
There are many tailwater fishing options today. Check the TVA website to view the generation schedules and plan your day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
