Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 70.0 degrees.
Today and tomorrow will be mostly sunny and hot, with a high temperature in the low 90’s and a slight chance for afternoon thunderstorms. There is a greater chance for thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday and it will be somewhat cooler.
Little River is flowing at 336 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.36 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 129 cfs. The water temperature is 67.5 degrees this morning.
Several streams, including Oconaluftee River, Tellico River and Cataloochee Creek are flowing lower than normal. Normal is low this time of the year. Others are flowing higher, including Little River and Little Pigeon River. Little River is flowing at a good fishing level this morning though maybe higher than some anglers prefer. You should not have a problem finding good water to fish today. All three prongs of Little River are good choices.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Try a dry and dropper rig. In the streams flowing higher, a weighted nymph rig will produce for you though trout may be taking dry flies too.
Water temperatures will be warm in the low elevations today. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler.
Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish in the lowland rivers is fair to good. Some of these rivers are flowing low. Little River and Little Pigeon River are flowing higher. Wading will be limited in these rivers. Cast streamers, poppers, foam floating flies or nymphs into the deeper pools and runs. You may find smallmouth bass in the riffles too on the rivers flowing higher.
This is not an ideal lake fishing day. It will be hot, with heat index values close to 100. Winds will be calm all day. I would go early and launch at daybreak. Hit the dimly lit banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. As the sun rises, seek shaded banks to fish. When the sun is high, I would go home.
There are generation schedules you can work with at many dams today. Most of the planned generation will be later today except for pulsing at times in the morning hours. If you are going to fish on one of the tailwaters, refer to the TVA website to develop a plan.
Daniel told me to mention that OROS Strike Indicators are finally in stock. Evidently they have been hard for dealers to buy this year.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
