Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 66.7 degrees.
Heavy rain for a short period of time just after midnight. I slept through it all and didn’t hear a thing. It was a surprise to me when I saw the streams rising this morning. Rainfall in Townsend amounted to 1.31 inches. The TVA rain gauge at Cades Cove recorded .47 inches.
It will be sunny and hot today with a high temperature in the low 90’s and a slight chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. Tomorrow will be warm, with a much higher chance for thunderstorms through the day and night. Thunderstorms are likely Tuesday.
Little River is flowing at 651 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.93 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 130 cfs. The water temperature is 68.2 degrees this morning. The river just peaked and is now receding.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 2,410 cfs, 3.94 feet, compared to median flow of 302 cfs. The river is rising quickly.
Other streams in the mountains are flowing near normal. Some were briefly affected by rainfall overnight with no significant change in flow.
You will find fairly high water in the Little River. One or more of the three prongs may be fine. There is also a chance you may see temporarily stained water in some streams. Some streams in the Little Pigeon watershed will be flowing high for at least a while today.
Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is good. Most lowland rivers are flowing near normal with the exception of Little River and Little Pigeon River. Wading in these rivers will be limited today and some areas may be stained. Smallmouth bass are taking poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers and crayfish patterns.
If you are planning to fish on a lake today, go early. Launch at daybreak and fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. As the sun rises, fish the shaded banks where fish are still holding in shallow water. Winds will be light and variable today. It will be hot.
There will be periods of no generation or occasional pulsing at many dams today. One exception is Norris Dam, where one generator will begin operating at 10 am. If you are planning to fish on a tailwater today, you have many options. Refer to the TVA website generation schedules to plan your day.
I was looking for fly fishing news this morning on the Midcurrent website and found a video describing how to tie the Smoky Mountain Candy dry fly. This was fly created by Walter Babb. Many of you have probably seen Walter tie it. For some reason, this is a killer dry fly pattern you should have in your fly box no matter where you fish.
