Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 72.5 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny, hot and humid with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. We have a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. Tomorrow will be a little cooler with a greater chance for thunderstorms. There is a high chance for thunderstorms Friday and through the weekend, with high temperatures in the low to middle 80’s. Some storms this week have the potential for heavy rain.
Little River is flowing at 184 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.94 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 125 cfs. The water temperature is 69.3 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal with Little River and Little Pigeon River being two exceptions. Normal flow in late July is low.
Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs.
Most rivers flowing out of the mountains and through the valleys are flowing low. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair to good. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with streamers, poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs and crayfish patterns.
If you are planning to fish on a lake today, go early because it will be sunny today. You will find fish in shallow water early. Fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers and swimming nymphs. Find shaded banks to fish as the sun rises. When the sun is high, most larger fish will be deep or near cover.
TVA is planning to generate at Norris Dam all day. Generators at most other dams will be off or pulsing during the morning, but running this afternoon. Tailwater anglers have many options today. Check the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing opportunities you have.
Jack and I drove to Kentucky Sunday to meet our close friends we hunt and fish with. We rented a large cabin on the Cumberland River several miles below Wolf Creek Dam. I drove home yesterday and the other guys are returning home this morning.
Fishing was good. Some of the guys floated with guide Hagan Wonn. Others floated and fished in kayaks. Jack fished on Hatchery Creek and did well. Trout were taking foam terrestrials and small nymphs. I didn’t fish. I just rested and relaxed but I did get up early to run the kayak shuttle up river about four miles two mornings.
We had a great time. When the seven of us get together, we always do. Frank and I started the first grade together in 1957. I met Mouse and Wayne a few years later, in junior high school. I met Jack, Roger and Ronnie here, 27 years ago, when Little River Outfitter opened. We all love hunting, fishing and laughing.
Frank and I started fishing with guide Hagan Wonn almost 20 years ago. Hagan is a close friend and an excellent guide. He is a good person to spend the day with on the Cumberland River. Frank and I have Hagan booked for two days of fishing next month.
I can’t wait to hear how well they did yesterday.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
