Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 75.9 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny, very warm and humid, with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. Thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and possible earlier. Rain may be heavy in some storms.
Tomorrow through Sunday will be cooler, with highs in the low to middle 80’s. There is a high chance for showers and thunderstorms each day. Some storms may be strong. Heavy rain is possible through the period. I saw one prediction this morning, that indicates we have the potential for 2 inches, to over 4 inches of rain over the next five days.
Little River is flowing at 162 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.86 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 117 cfs. The water temperature is 71.0 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the mountains are flowing higher than median flow this morning, while others are flowing below normal. We may see significant changes in water levels over the next few days.
Water temperatures are high in the low elevations. If you go fishing today, fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Be watchful for quickly rising water each day through the weekend. Flash flooding is possible. If you suddenly see stained water where you are fishing, high water may be headed your way. Get out of the stream on the side where you can safely get back to your vehicle.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. The fish are hungry and actively seeking food. Terrestrial insects are an important food source for trout right now. Floating foam terrestrial patterns are a good dry fly choice. Drop a Green Weenie, Squirmy Worm or a small bead head nymph off your dry fly.
Many lowland rivers are flowing near normal this morning. Normal is low in late July. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair to good. Fish in the deeper pools and runs using streamers, nymphs, poppers, foam floating flies or crayfish patterns. There is a good chance these rivers will be rising and temporarily stained through the weekend.
I would launch on a lake early. Fish the dimly lit or shaded banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. Be watchful for approaching thunderstorms. The heat index will be high today. I would plan to come home early.
Tailwater anglers will find some generation schedules to work with today, especially early. TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams later this morning or early afternoon. Check the generation schedules on the TVA website to plan your tailwater fishing day.
After we get through today, it will be much cooler through Monday. I am looking forward to it.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
