Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 72.3 degrees.
It rained briefly yesterday, but no heavy rain fell in Townsend and apparently not in most watersheds in the mountains. Tellico River rose quickly yesterday morning but receded through the day. We got .21 inches of rain in Townsend yesterday morning. The Knoxville Airport reported .37 inches.
Using the Knoxville Airport as the rainfall reference, July has been a wet month. Rainfall so far has amounted to 7.11 inches, compared to normal of 4.95 inches, a 2.16 inch surplus.
The chance for rain today is lower than was predicted yesterday morning. We have a 30% to 50% chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms today. The high temperature will be in the middle 80’s.
The chance for rain and thunderstorms, with the potential for heavy rain is predicted tomorrow. The high temperature will be in the lower 80’s.
Little River is flowing at 164 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.87 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 129 cfs. The water temperature is 69.6 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near normal or higher than normal. Water temperatures are warm in the lowest elevations, but cooler than we have seen recently.
This could be a good fishing day in the mountains. Fishing was good yesterday. Guide David Knapp brought a father and son by the shop yesterday afternoon who were his clients for the day. The son caught a brook trout, brown trout and some rainbows. He was awarded the “Grand Slam” pin for his good day. David said the Park was fishing really well. I don’t know where they fished. That is something I don’t ask a guide.
If you go today, fish in the middle to high elevations where the water is cooler. Trout are definitely taking terrestrial patterns. David’s clients were using beetle dry fly imitations. Drop a Green Weenie or small nymph off your dry fly.
Fishing in the lowland rivers for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish should be good today, thanks to higher water levels in some rivers. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
This may be a good lake fishing day. It should be mostly cloudy today and winds will be light. Hit the banks with streamers, foam floating flies, poppers or swimming nymphs. Watch for thunderstorms this afternoon.
There are some good generation schedules at some dams especially early today. And, there are some generation schedules that are not good. Refer to the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you have.
I am busy receiving fly tying materials and tools and packaging spooled items. I have one more order to go then I’ll place next week’s orders.
I hope today turns out to be a good fishing day for you. Maybe it will.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
