Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:00 am, the temperature is 71.6 degrees.
We can expect more rain and thunderstorms today, tonight and tomorrow. The chance for rain today is 80%. Flash flooding is possible. The high temperature will be in the low 80’s, which is actually about normal in July. Rainfall may exceed one inch with higher amounts in thunderstorms. Thunderstorms are likely tonight.
Thunderstorms are likely again tomorrow. The chance for rain is 90%. There is the potential for heavy rain again. The high temperature tomorrow is predicted to be around 80 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 256 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.16 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 107 cfs. The water temperature is 69.1 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains were affected by rain yesterday and overnight. Water levels are above normal in most drainages. Normal is low in late July. Tellico River is flowing fairly high but it is receding now.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, be alert for stained or rising water. Fish in the middle to high elevations where the water is cooler. Trout will be taking dry flies and nymphs. Try a foam beetle for your dry fly. Drop a Green Weenie or small nymph off your dry fly.
Most lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish should be good in most rivers. There is a high chance some of these rivers will rise and become stained today through tomorrow. Streamers, poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs and crayfish patterns should work for you.
This may be a good lake fishing day unless you are caught in a thunderstorm, which is never enjoyable and always tense. It should be overcast. That is always a good lake fishing condition to enjoy. Cast to the banks with streamers, poppers, foam floating flies or swimming nymphs. Watch for approaching thunderstorms and run for the ramp if you see one coming.
I normally fish close to the ramp or marina on days like today.
There are workable generation schedules planned today at many dams, offering plenty of tailwater fishing options. If you are hoping to fish the Clinch River below Norris Dam, check the predicted flows. It looks like they are planning to start generating early this morning.
I have not noticed a generation schedule like the one posted for today at Wolf Creek Dam on the Cumberland River in Kentucky. It appears they will not start generating there until this afternoon. That is highly unusual. I’m not sure I would trust that schedule. TVA plans to generate with one unit all day at South Holston Dam.
Fishing is a sport of anticipation. Our sport is weather dependent. Today we will be anticipating the weather. Fishing conditions may be good or bad. I hope they are good for you. Time will tell.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
