Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 68.4 degrees.
It will be warmer today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s and a low chance for thunderstorms. Tomorrow will be warmer, in the low 90’s, with a moderate chance for thunderstorms. The chance for showers and thunderstorms will increase Thursday and continue through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 328 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.34 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 119 cfs. The water temperature is 66.7 degrees at the low elevation gauge site near Townsend.
Most if not all streams in the mountains are flowing higher than median flow for this date. Many of the streams are receding. Little Pigeon River is rising at the Sevierville gauge. Tellico River is flowing significantly higher than median flow at 748 cfs or 2.61 feet, but the river is receding.
What we have are Spring-like flows in the Smokies. Fishing has improved. The water will be warm in the low elevations through the weekend. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Terrestrial imitations are good fly choices as land based insects are an important food source for trout in the Appalachians during the late Summer months. Try a foam beetle as your dry fly. Drop a Green Weenie, small bead head nymph or squirmy worm off your dry fly.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains and through the valleys are at good fishing levels for the most part. Fishing for smallmouth bass and other species is good. Try poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
It should be cloudy this morning before clearing later today. That is a very good lake fishing condition. It will be a little breezy today, with winds out of the south then becoming west later at 5 to 10 miles per hour. I would still launch early. Hit the banks and cover with streamers, poppers, foam floating flies or swimming nymphs.
Watch for game fish feeding on the surface while the sky is dimly lit. Schools of threadfin shad may be actively filtering plankton near the surface until the sun breaks through the clouds. Fish may be feeding on the shad.
TVA will generating around the clock at Norris and South Holston Dams today. Generation at other dams will not begin until later this morning or early afternoon. Refer to the TVA generation schedules to plan your tailwater fishing day.
An agreement was announced last week, that Simms is being acquired by Vista Outdoor for $192 million. Vista is the parent company for 39 companies in the outdoor industry, including Bushnell, CamelBak and Remington Ammunition. Simms will remain headquartered in Bozeman, Montana. There are definitely less visitors in Townsend which is normal in early August. Kids are back in school. Young families who vacation in the Smokies are at home. This trend will continue until the Fall, though there will be higher numbers of visitors on weekends.
