Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 66.2 degrees.
It will be sunny and hot today, with a high temperature in the low 90’s and a low chance for scattered thunderstorms late today. We can expect high temperatures in the upper 80’s tomorrow and each day through the weekend. Showers and thunderstorms are likely each day beginning tomorrow through Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 225 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.07 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 116 cfs. The water temperature is 68.4 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal with some exceptions. Cataloochee Creek and Davidson River are flowing right at normal this morning. Fishing is good but you will need to fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the 60’s at midday or later when the water is warmest.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Terrestrial patterns are good fly choices.
Most lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal with some exceptions. I drove by Little River yesterday in Townsend a couple of times and the river looked really good. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is good. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
Go fishing on the lakes early for two reasons. First, it will be sunny today. Second, it will be hot later, with a heat index approaching 100. Fish early when the sun is low and the water is dimly lit. Move to shaded banks as the sun rises. Cast to the banks and cover with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs.
Generation schedules at area dams are going to be similar to yesterday. TVA will be generating at Norris and South Holston dams all day. At other dams, they will begin generating in the late morning or early afternoon. Tailwater anglers do have some options today. Visit the TVA website to see what they are and plan your tailwater fishing day.
Looking at the long term weather forecast is encouraging. We can expect rain or scattered thunderstorms most days through August 17th, helping keep streams levels higher than normal. I hope that turns out to be true. It should be cooler next week, closer to normal. The historical monthly average high temperature here is 82 degrees in August. The average low temperature is 62 degrees.
I am looking forward to September, when the average high is 78 degrees and the low is 56 degrees. Of course, October is cool, but usually dry. Maybe not this year.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
