Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 68.9 degrees.
The wet weather pattern will continue through the weekend. Today will be warm with a high temperature in the middle to upper 80’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon. Tomorrow and Sunday will be warm again, with a heightened chance for showers and thunderstorms each day.
Little River is flowing at 167 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.88 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 116 cfs. The water temperature is 69.6 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing at or near normal while others are flowing higher. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Foam beetle imitations and yellow sally stonefly patterns are excellent dry fly choices. A good dropper nymph pattern is the Green Weenie, though other small bead head nymphs are also good choices.
Flows in the lowland rivers are at about normal this morning. Fishing for smallmouth bass and other warm water species is fair to good. Fish in the deeper pools and runs using poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
It is supposed to be mostly cloudy today, which is a very good lake fishing condition. I would still go early to be sure the sun is not shining on the water. Hit the banks and cover with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. Watch for game fish attacking shad near the surface.
TVA will be generating all day at Norris and South Holston dams. At other dams, they will begin generating later this morning or early afternoon. You can work with some of these generation schedules if you are wading and there are more options if you are boating. Plan your tailwater fishing day by first visiting the TVA website.
The long term weather forecast remains encouraging through August 19th. I don’t see any scorching hot days in our near future. Highs should be in the low to middle 80’s. Lows are predicted to be in the 60’s. The chance for rain is fairly high each day except for two.
We are all looking forward to Fall and hoping it is a wet one. The first day of Fall this year is Thursday, September 22nd. We normally enjoy cooler temperatures in the Fall, while fishing for trout in the larger low elevation rivers and streams.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
