Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:35 am, the temperature is 68.2 degrees.
Today will be warm and humid with a high temperature in the middle to upper 80’s. It will be cloudy today, with a chance for thunderstorms. There is a higher chance for showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and through tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 225 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.07 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 119 cfs. The water temperature is 69.1 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Some streams rose yesterday due to scattered thunderstorms but most are at good fishing levels, including Little River. Rainfall in Townsend amounted to .37 inches yesterday.
Water levels will likely rise then fall at times this weekend and into early next week. The streams are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the middle to high elevations where the water is cooler.
Fishing for trout is good in the mountains for August. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Foam beetles and yellow sally stonefly patterns are good dry fly choices. Drop a Green Weenie or small bead head nymph off your dry fly.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and other species is fair to good in the lowland rivers. Water levels are fairly low but many are flowing higher than normal in August. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
This will be a good lake fishing day though you may encounter thunderstorms later. It will be mostly cloudy which is a favorable condition. Winds are predicted to be calm except in thunderstorms. Cast to the banks or cover with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. The lakes are warm so larger game fish may be holding in deeper water. Weighted streamers or swimming nymphs may work best. However, you may find fish feeding near the surface on threadfin shad today, due to the expected overcast skies.
If you are planning to fish on a tailwater today, there are several options.
The turbines are off at Norris Dam, where TVA has been generating around the clock during the past few days. They will start generating later this morning so if you are wade fishing, you will need to go early and pick the right spots to fish until the water rises. If you are boating, you will have more options.
TVA will be generating later this morning or early afternoon at most dams and generating with one unit at South Holston Dam all day.
Check the TVA website before you go to plan your tailwater fishing day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
