Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:03 am, the temperature is 67.5 degrees.
Scattered thunderstorms moved through the foothills and Smokies yesterday. We got about a half inch of rain in Townsend.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the middle to upper 80’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and tonight.
Little River is flowing at 271 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.20 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 122 cfs. The water temperature is 67.5 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the Smokies were affected by scattered thunderstorms yesterday. The affected streams are receding. Most streams are flowing at or above normal and at good fishing levels. Water temperatures will be warm today, so fish in the middle to upper elevation streams where the water is cooler.
Trout in the mountains are taking dry flies and nymphs. Good dry fly patterns include foam beetles and yellow sally stonefly imitations. A nymph dropper is a good tactic. Try a small bead head nymph or Green Weenie.
Many lowland rivers are flowing at good levels compared to normal in August. Fishing for smallmouth bass and other warmer water species is good. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with streamers, foam floating flies, poppers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
I would go lake fishing early. It may be cloudy this morning but sunny later today. Winds will be calm. Cast to the banks or cover with streamers, poppers, foam floating flies and swimming nymphs. As the sun rises, move to shaded banks to fish. Larger fish will likely be holding in deeper water, where you can reach them with streamers or swimming nymphs.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are offering some favorable generation schedules today with some exceptions. TVA will be generating at South Holston and Cherokee dams most of the day. They plan to begin generating at Norris Dam later this morning. At some dams they will be generating later today. You can work with many of these schedules and enjoy some tailwater fishing at least in the morning hours and later downriver.
We have had a wet August so far, giving us better than normal fishing conditions on the free flowing streams and rivers. It appears that trend will continue according to the long term weather forecast. And, it should be cooler later this week and through August 21st.
That is good news.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
