Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 68.0 degrees.
Today will be warm with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon. Tomorrow will bring us more of the same, hot with a greater chance for thunderstorms. Starting Wednesday, it will be cooler through the weekend with highs in the low 80’s. We have a high chance for rain Wednesday and Thursday.
Little River is flowing at 307 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.29 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 135 cfs. The water temperature is 67.1 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing at normal or higher than normal. We will probably see fluctuations in stream levels over the next few days, with the possibility of temporarily stained water at times.
Fishing for trout is good in the middle to higher elevations where the water is cooler. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. A foam beetle or yellow sally stonefly are both good dry fly choices. Drop a small bead head nymph or Green Weenie off your dry fly.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and other warmer water species is good in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains and through the valleys. Fish in the deeper pools and runs using poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns. You may encounter stained water at times over the next few days.
Winds will be calm today and it may become overcast later, which is a good lake fishing condition. I would still go lake fishing early. Cast to the banks and cover with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. As the sun rises, find shaded areas to fish. The larger fish may be deeper, so your streamers and swimming nymph patterns may work best.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will start generating at most dams later this morning or early afternoon. They plan to generate at Norris and South Holston dams all day. If you are wade fishing you can work with the schedules at some dams by going early and choosing the best area to fish until the rivers rise. If you are boating you will have more options. Refer to the TVA website to plan your tailwater fishing day.
So far, August has been a good fishing month thanks to the frequent rain which is predicted to continue at least through Thursday. The long term weather forecast indicates a cooling trend will begin later this week and last through August 22nd. Temperatures will be much closer to normal. The normal average high in August is 82 degrees. The average low temperature this month is 62 degrees.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
