Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 68.0 degrees.
Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the middle 80’s. Thunderstorms are likely today and tonight. Rainfall may be heavy. Localized flooding is possible.
Thunderstorms are likely tomorrow and through the night. It will be cooler, with a high temperature in the low 80’s.
Friday through Sunday will be sunny and comfortable with only a slight chance for rain Sunday. This is going to be a nice weekend.
Little River is flowing at 246 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.13 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 118 cfs. The water temperature is 67.6 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near normal, with some flowing slightly higher. A few rose overnight but they are receding now. Fishing conditions are good this morning. That may not be the case late today if heavy rain affects some or all watersheds.
I would plan on fishing early today. A middle to higher elevation stream is a good choice, where the water is cooler. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Watch for quickly rising water.
Most lowland rivers are flowing at good levels this morning. Fishing for smallmouth bass and other warmer water species is good. Some rivers may rise later today or tonight and become stained. Try poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
I would plan to fish on a lake early. You might get caught in a thunderstorm. Cast to the banks and cover with streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers or foam floating flies. If there is no cloud cover, find shaded banks to fish.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers plan to begin generating either this morning or early this afternoon at most dams. If you are hoping to fish on a tailwater today, you may be able to work this some of the schedules. Check the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you have.
Again, we are waiting to see what weather related fishing conditions will be later today and tomorrow. We do know this is going to be a beautiful weekend. The low temperature Friday night may be in the high 50’s. It will feel like Fall. Hopefully water levels will be good this weekend. If they are, you should be able to fish in the low elevations, which would be a nice change.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
