Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 68.9 degrees.
The predicted heavy rain missed Townsend and much of the Great Smoky Mountains yesterday.
Less than a quarter inch of rain fell in Townsend. The Knoxville Airport reported .56 inches. Light rain is falling at our house this morning.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely today and tonight. Heavy rain is possible in some storms. It will be cooler, with a high temperature in the low 80’s. Tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday will be sunny, with lower humidity and a high temperature in the low to middle 80’s. Lows at night will be in the low 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 256 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.16 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 124 cfs. The water temperature is 66.7 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing at or slightly higher than normal. Most if not all are at good fishing levels at least for now.
Fishing for trout in the mountains is good. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. This is the time to be using beetle dry fly patterns, though most reasonable dry flies will work. Drop a Green Weenie or small bead head nymph off your dry fly. Fishing deep with nymphs is also a good tactic.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and other lowland river species is good. There is the possibility for stained water at times in some rivers today. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
I would launch early at a lake this morning and fish the dimly lit banks and cover with streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers or foam floating flies. As the sun rises, if there is no cloud cover, move to the shaded banks to fish.
TVA and the Corps will be generating later this morning or early afternoon at most dams. Wade fishing anglers have many options early today, until the water rises. Check the TVA website from the links below to plan your tailwater fishing day.
We have a wonderful weekend to look forward to. I can’t wait.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
