Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 62.2 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the low 80’s. Rain is not predicted. It will be mostly sunny tomorrow with a high temperature in the middle 80’s, with no rain in the forecast. What a great weekend this is going to be.
Little River is flowing at a perfect fishing level of 242 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.12 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 117 cfs. The water temperature is 66.2 degrees this morning and falling.
Streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing at normal or higher than normal. One exception is Cataloochee Creeks, which is flowing below normal. Water temperatures are falling quickly this morning.
Today will be a very good fishing day in the Smokies, especially for the month of August. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Terrestrials are a significant food source for trout during the late summer and early Fall. Foam or deer hair beetles are a good dry fly choice. Ant patterns are hard to see, but you can drop one behind the beetle, using the dry fly as a strike indicator. Another good subsurface dropper is a Green Weenie. Many other dry flies and nymphs will work. Stay hidden from the trout, don’t spook them with your cast and get a good drift.
Lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains and through the valleys are at good fishing levels. Most are flowing higher than normal. Others are flowing at normal or slightly below. If you are targeting smallmouth bass, rock bass or panfish, your fly selection should include poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
The weather forecasts indicate today will be mostly cloudy or sunshine with clouds mixed. If it really is overcast, it will be a good lake fishing day. Winds will be light today. Cast to the banks or cover with streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers or foam floating flies. Watch for gamefish feeding on schools of shad. Going early when you know the light will be dim is a good idea. Or, wait and fish later this evening.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating at some dams most of the day. I checked the generation schedules and saw a few you can work with if you carefully plan. Visit the TVA website to determine where to tailwater fish and when to go.
This will be a beautiful weekend. Get out and enjoy it if you can.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
