Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 70.2 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the middle 80’s. There is a fairly low chance for thunderstorms today. It will be mostly sunny tomorrow and cooler, with a high in the low 80’s and a slight chance for thunderstorms.
A cold front will move in Wednesday with showers likely and a high temperature in the upper 70’s with a low in the low 60’s. Thursday will be more of the same, wet and cool.
Little River is flowing at 176 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.91 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 109 cfs. The water temperature is 67.6 degrees this morning.
Stream levels in the mountains vary between lower to higher than normal. Fishing for trout is good though you may want to fish in the middle to higher elevations today and tomorrow where the water is cooler. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Terrestrial patterns are good fly choices. Try a foam or deer hair beetle with a Green Weenie or ant dropper.
Some lowland rivers are flowing higher than normal while others are flowing at normal or lower. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish will be good today in some rivers and maybe fair in others. Fish the deeper pools and runs with streamers, poppers, nymphs, foam floating flies or crayfish patterns.
I would fish early or late on the lakes today when the sun is low. Fish the shaded or dimly lit banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. Larger bass and bluegill may be deeper, where streamers and swimming nymphs may work best.
There are some interesting generation schedules for tailwater anglers to work with today. Some look good and others do not. Check the TVA website to see what is going on today at your favorite tailwater.
We are going to enjoy Fall-like weather this week. There are no heat waves predicted through August 29th. We endured a hot Summer and I think we deserve a break. We are going to get it.
Looking at the long term forecast, it appears we will have more rain to keep the streams flowing well.
Higher flows and cooler water equates to good fishing in the free flowing rivers and streams. That is what we have to look forward to through the end of August.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
