July 2022 was the wettest month on record in the Smokies at the Mount LeConte weather station. The station measured 18.16 inches of rain during the month.
June this year was the driest month on record, with total rainfall measuring only 3.27 inches at the same location.
Little River is flowing at 167 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.88 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 137 cfs. The water temperature is 67.6 degrees this morning.
Many streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal or slightly higher than normal. Cataloochee Creek is flowing lower than normal. Water temperatures are good in the middle to higher elevations.
Fishing is good. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Terrestrial fly patterns are working well. Try a beetle dry fly with an ant or a Green Weenie dropper.
Most lowland rivers exiting the mountains and flowing through the valleys are at near normal levels. Fishing for smallmouth bass is fair to good in these rivers. Try poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
Lake fishing will be best early or late today when the sun is low. Cast to the banks or cover in shaded or dimly lit areas. Poppers or foam floating flies may produce for you. Larger fish may be holding deeper depending on where you are fishing. Try weighted streamers or swimming nymphs to get deeper.
TVA and the Corps will begin generating this morning at many dams with some exceptions. Check the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are today.
Effective March 1, 2023, Great Smoky Mountains National Park will require the purchase of parking tags at all locations if you are parking 15 minutes or longer.
