Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 64.0 degrees.
Through the end of the week, each day will be cooler, with highs in the low 80’s and lows at night in the low to middle 60’s. The chance for showers and thunderstorms will increase tomorrow. We have a greater chance for rain Friday and Saturday.
The long term forecast indicates we will enjoy cool temperatures with a good chance for rain every day through the end of August.
Little River is flowing at 154 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.83 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 117 cfs. The water temperature is 66.5 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are falling. Fishing for trout is good. The fish are taking dry flies and nymphs. Terrestrial fly patterns are a good choice. Try beetles, ants and Green Weenies.
Lowland rivers are flowing near normal. Fishing for smallmouth bass and other warmer river species is good. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
I found a great article on the Fly Fisherman website this morning titled “Fly Fishing for Topwater Smallmouth Bass and written by Dave and Emily Whitlock. I didn’t read the entire article, but I will later. You can read it by CLICKING HERE. This article was first published in 2016.
I have not heard much at all from lake fisherman lately and I have not been. Today will be a good lake fishing day with fly fishing gear. It should be overcast much of the day, especially this afternoon. Winds will be light. Cast to the banks and cover with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. You will probably find the larger fish holding in deeper water, making streamers or swimming nymphs the preferred flies to use.
It appears TVA and the Corps will be releasing water at many dams beginning this morning or early afternoon. Generation will begin at 6 am at Norris Dam, including the testing of sluice gates which will vary the flows.
The Corps is generating around the clock at Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky. From what I have heard, that will be the case on weekdays, with the water turned off at night on the weekends for several weeks. I have not read any articles about this, but I have heard it from reliable sources.
Check the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are.
Foothills Sealcoating will begin sealing and striping our parking lot today. I roped off a section last night so anglers would not leave vehicles unattended in the area. The second and largest phase will be done next week or later. When the second phase is done, parking will be limited at the shop for 24 hours. Please do not leave a vehicle unattended in our parking lot when that is being done. I will let you know when the second phase is planned. During that time, guides will need to meet clients somewhere else.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
