Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:54 am, the temperature is 60.6 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature in the low 80’s and a low chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. Tomorrow will be slightly cooler, around 80 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms are likely tomorrow and each day through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 134 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.75 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 120 cfs. The water temperature is 66 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing close to normal or lower than normal. Fishing for trout is good. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Terrestrial imitations are excellent fly choices. Try beetle, ant and inchworm patterns.
Lowland river fishing for smallmouth bass and other species is fair to good. Most of these rivers are flowing near normal. Normal in August is low. Fish the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
It will be sunny today. Fishing will be best early and late on the lakes when the sun is lower. Cast to the shaded banks or cover using streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers or foam floating flies.
If you plan to fish on a tailwater today, check the TVA website to see the generation schedules. What you will find is, TVA and the Corps will be generating most of the day at many of the dams. There are a few generation schedules you can work with, especially if you go early.
Every angler I talk to is enjoying the cooler days and nights. This trend is predicted to continue through the end of the month. Predicted rain over the next few days and through the month should keep the free flowing streams, flowing at or above normal. Above normal would be my choice.
Fall is not far off. Officially, Fall begins Thursday September 22nd. If the rain continues, like it has lately, this will be a good fly fishing Fall in East Tennessee.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
