Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:15 am, the temperature is 69.3 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature around 81 degrees. We have a chance for showers and thunderstorms today and tonight. A low to moderate chance for showers and thunderstorms is predicted tomorrow.
Little River is flowing at 109 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.65 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 117 cfs. The water temperature is 68.2 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near normal or below normal. Normal is low in August. Cataloochee Creek and Oconaluftee River are rising this morning.
Fishing for trout in the Smokies is fair to good. Fish in the middle to higher elevations where the water is cooler. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Terrestrial imitations are good options for both, including beetles, ants and inchworm patterns.
Lowland rivers are flowing at or lower than normal. Fishing for smallmouth bass and other species is fair. Fish in the deeper pools and runs using poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
It will be overcast today, which is a very good lake fishing condition. If you are targeting bass and panfish, cast to the banks or cover with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. You may find larger fish in the deeper water, so streamers or swimming nymphs may work best.
A very good streamer to use is a large weighted Wooly Bugger.
When I write about swimming nymphs, I’m referring to weighted dragonfly patterns. I tie mine with bead chain eyes, a dubbed body, rubber or silicone legs and rabbit fur for the tail and collar. Good colors are black, olive, rusty orange or chartreuse. These nymphs work well for many species in the lakes. Let them sink then retrieve slowly and sporadically. Try different depths and retrieval speeds.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating later this morning or early afternoon at many of their dams. With careful planning, you may be able to work with some of their generation schedules, whether you are wading or boating in the tailwaters below. Visit the TVA website to see what your options are and plan accordingly.
They will be generating at Wolf Creek Dam on the Cumberland River in Kentucky around the clock today, as they have been recently. I am hearing this may be the case for a while.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
