Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 69.1 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low 80’s. We have a low chance for thunderstorms, mainly this afternoon. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low to middle 80’s and no rain is predicted.
Little River is flowing at 107 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.64 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 118 cfs. The water temperature is 68.2 degrees this morning.
The anticipated rain and thunderstorms over the past three days did not occur in many of the watersheds in the mountains. Only light rain fell in some areas. As a result, many streams are flowing at low levels but close to normal in August.
If you go, fish in the middle to higher elevations where the water is cooler. Fish the broken water in plunge pools and deeper runs. Stealth is paramount to your success. Dress to blend with the forest. Trout will take dry flies or nymphs. Terrestrial patterns are good fly choices. Try beetles, ants and inchworm patterns, including the Green Weenie.
Lowland rivers are flowing near normal which is low in August. Fish the deeper pools and runs with poppers, streamers, foam floating flies, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
Lake fishing is fair to good. It will be overcast today which is an excellent condition. Streamers and swimming nymphs are good fly choices. You may catch bass and other species on poppers or foam floating flies. I think you will do best using sub-surface flies.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating much of the day at several dams. They are generating around the clock at Norris and Wolf Creek Dams. There are a few tailwater fishing opportunities if you go early and be at the right spot until the water rises. If you are boating, you more options.
I was off yesterday and it was a beautiful “almost Fall” day. Fall is not far off and the signs of the coming season are appearing. Leaves are changing colors in some trees, and more leaves are falling. Over the next few weeks, we will see more Fall foliage change. Spiders are building more webs. That is a sign of Fall I notice every year. I heard a few acorns hit the metal roof of our garage yesterday. Dennis told me he and Jimmy saw acorns on the ground while fishing in the high elevations last week. Temperatures at night will be dipping into the 50’s in a few weeks.
I am really looking forward to Fall and I know you are too. I hope it is a wet one.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
