Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 65.5 degrees.
It will be mostly sunny today with a high in the low 80’s and a low tonight in the low 60’s. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the middle 80’s. The chance for showers and thunderstorms increases beginning Thursday and lasting each day through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 98.1 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.60 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 113 cfs. The water temperature is 68.7 degrees.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing at normal or below normal. Normal in August is low. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations and they will warm further today. Fish in the middle to low elevations where the water is cooler.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Terrestrial imitations are good fly choices. Try beetle, ant and inchworm patterns.
With the low water conditions we have now, stealth is very important to your success. Dress to blend with the forest. Fish the broken water where the trout are hiding.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Fishing will be best in the deeper pools and runs. Crayfish patterns are a good bet for smallmouth bass. You may also do well with streamers, nymphs, poppers or foam floating flies.
If you are planning to fish on a lake today, it would be best if you are on your way to the ramp right now. Launch at daybreak and hit the banks and cover with streamers or swimming nymphs. Larger bass and panfish will likely be deep. But, you may do well using top water flies. Try poppers or foam floating flies.
As the sun rises, find shaded areas to fish.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at some dams, including Norris and Wolf Creek. At others they will begin generating this morning or early afternoon. You will be able to work with some of the schedules to get fishing time on some tailwaters. Check the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are.
What we have today are not ideal fishing conditions. Hopefully, the rain later this week will improve fishing in the free flowing rivers. And, hopefully we will have better generation schedules for fishing on the tailwaters this weekend.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
