Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:53 am, the temperature is 65.5 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the low to middle 80’s and a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the middle 80’s and a greater chance for thunderstorms. It will be warmer this weekend with highs in the upper 80’s. Thunderstorms are possible both Saturday and Sunday but the chance is low.
Little River is flowing at 87.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.55 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 106 cfs. The water temperature is 68.9 degrees this morning.
We could use some rain now, though rainfall this month is only slightly below normal.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing lower than normal. Normal at this point in August is low. The streams are warm in the low elevations. It will be sunny and warm today and through the weekend. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the middle 60’s or cooler.
If the trout don’t see you, you will catch more, so dress to blend with the forest. In these low water conditions, trout will be hiding in the broken choppy water in riffles, pockets, plunge pools and runs.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Terrestrial fly patterns are good choices. Try beetles, ants and inchworm patterns.
The lowland rivers are flowing low. Fishing for smallmouth bass and other species is fair. Fish in the deeper pools and runs. Try poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns.
Lake fishing with flies is fair. It will be sunny today so you will do best early and late when the sun is low. Fish the shaded and dimly lit banks and cover. Weighted streamers and swimming nymphs will work best, especially for larger warmwater fish. They will be holding in deeper and cooler water. Poppers and foam floating flies may produce for you too.
There are tailwater fishing opportunities today below a few dams. Check the predicted flows on the TVA website. For the most part, you will need to go early below dams where the generation will begin this morning or early afternoon. They will be generating at some dams all day, including Norris Dam. The Corps is generating around the clock at Wolf Creek Dam and sluicing. They are in the process of lowering Lake Cumberland in Kentucky.
I read a disturbing article this morning. People are using the Park as a dump. A new non-profit organization named “Save Our Smokies” is doing something about it. They removed several thousand pounds of trash in the Park last year. Additionally, graffiti painted on structures, signs and bridges is a another problem the group is addressing. Save our Smokies is looking for volunteers. You can read more about this on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
Contact them and sign up.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
