Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 67.6 degrees.
Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the middle 80’s. Scattered thunderstorms will develop this afternoon. The chance for rain today ranges from 40% to 60% from different weather websites.
Tomorrow and Sunday will be warmer, with highs in the upper 80’s. It will be mostly sunny. We have a chance for scattered thunderstorms each day.
Little River is flowing at 83.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.53 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 106 cfs. The water temperature is 69.4 degrees this morning.
Thunderstorms affected some stream levels overnight. Little Pigeon River and Tellico River rose sharply, but they are receding. Oconaluftee River was mildly affected by rain. Other streams are flowing below normal. Normal in late August is low.
Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations and that trend will continue through the weekend. Fish in the middle to high elevations where the water is cooler. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Flies that mimic beetles, ants, inchworms and other terrestrial insects are good fly choices.
Most lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains and through the valleys are at low levels. Fishing for smallmouth bass and panfish is fair. Fish the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
Fly fishing on the lakes is fair. Weighted streamers or swimming nymphs will probably work best. You might try poppers or foam floating flies. Fish early or late when the sun is low. Cast to the dimly lit banks and cover.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating all day at Norris Dam. They are generating and sluicing day and night at Wolf Creek Dam. Generation at other dams will begin this morning or early afternoon. Whether you are boating or wading, you can work with some schedules, especially if you go early and fish until the water rises where you are. Check the TVA website to plan your tailwater fishing day.
We are fairly busy at the shop, especially for August. August is always a slow month at our store. I’m looking forward to September and the arrival of Fall. Fishing will improve in September, unless we have a dry spell. Looking at the long term weather forecast, we have a chance for rain every day through the 9th. It should be cooler, beginning on September 4th.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
