Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:12 am, the temperature is 69.8 degrees.
It will be sunny and hot today with a high temperature around 90 degrees. We do have a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. Tomorrow will be sunny and hot again, with a low chance for showers and thunderstorms.
Little River is flowing at 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.61 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 102 cfs. The water temperature is 69.8 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing at normal this morning. Tellico River is rising quickly, though that probably will not last long. The water is very warm in the low elevations and will continue to be warm for a few days. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the 60’s during the warmest part of the day.
Trout will be hiding in broken water, riffles, pockets, plunge pools and deeper runs. Dry flies and nymphs will work for you. A dry and dropper rig is a good choice. Or you may do best using weighted nymph rigs. Terrestrial dries and nymphs would be my choice. Try beetles, ants and inchworm patterns.
Lowland rivers are flowing low for now, though they are flowing at normal. Normal is low in late August. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair to good. Streamers, crayfish patterns, poppers and foam floating flies should be in your fly boxes. Fish in the deeper pools and runs.
Lake fishing is fair. It will be hot and sunny today so go early or late during the low light hours. Fish the banks and cover using streamers or swimming nymphs. Top water poppers or foam floating flies may work, especially when the light is dim. I think the larger fish will be deeper.
TVA and the Corps will begin generating later this morning or early afternoon at most dams. There are tailwater fishing opportunities today. Check the generation schedules on the TVA website to plan your day.
Traffic is very heavy due to a Jeep event that has drawn what seems to be about a million owners and vehicles. Wranglers are buzzing around in long lines in Pigeon Forge, Townsend, Gatlinburg and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Today is my day off this week so that explains why I slept in and started writing this report later than usual. I got up at 5:00 am instead of 4:30 am.
Foothills Sealing is coming back to the shop tomorrow to continue sealing and striping the parking lot.
Please do not leave any vehicles in our lot unless you are shopping in the store over the next 3 days.
We will have enough parking for shoppers, but not for unattended vehicles left all day or overnight. We will be re-arranging the parking lot often during this time.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
