Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 66.7 degrees.
It will be hot again today with a high temperature near 90 degrees and heat indexes as high as 96. We have a low chance for thunderstorms this afternoon.
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the middle 80’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely in the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue through tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 81.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.52 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 95 cfs. The water temperature is 70.9 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near normal which is low. Cataloochee Creek and Tellico River are flowing slightly higher than normal. Water temperatures are very warm in the low elevations. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the 60’s during the warmest part of the day.
Trout are hiding in broken water: riffles, pockets, plunge pools and deeper runs. Stealth is paramount to your success in these low water conditions. Dress to blend with the forest. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. A dry and dropper rig is a good tactic. Terrestrial insect patterns are an excellent fly choice. Try beetles, ants and inchworm imitations.
Lowland rivers are flowing low but close to normal. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair to good. Fish in the deeper pools and runs. Fish in the shaded areas if possible. Poppers, foam floating flies, streamers and crayfish patterns are good fly choices.
If you plan to fish on a lake, go early or late when the light is dim and it is cooler. Cast to the banks or cover with streamers or swimming nymphs. The surface temperatures will be warm. Larger game fish will likely be deep. Poppers or foam floating flies may work, so give them a try. I think you will do best using sub-surface weighted flies.
Tailwater anglers will find workable generation schedules early today. TVA and the Corps will begin generating later this morning or early afternoon at many dams. They will be generating all day at Norris and Wolf Creek dams. It appears the turbines will be off this afternoon at South Holston Dam. Always check the TVA website yourself before going fishing on the tailwaters.
A large crew will be sealing and striping our parking lot beginning this morning. We will have parking available all day but only for customers who are shopping in the store.
Please do not leave any vehicles parked for long periods as we will be moving the available parking often today and tomorrow.
I closed off the parking area last night so no vehicles could be left at the shop early this morning, for the day.
Often, fishermen will meet their friends, or guides will meet their clients at the shop and leave vehicles for the day. That is usually fine, but not today or tomorrow.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
