Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 66.5 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the middle 80’s. No rain is predicted today. Humidity will be lower than it has been lately. Tomorrow and Friday will be sunny and warmer with a high in the upper 80’s. The chance for rain returns this weekend.
Little River is flowing at 80 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.51 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 87 cfs. The water temperature at the low elevation USGS gauge site near Townsend is 70.3 degrees.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing slightly lower than normal. Normal this time of the year is low. Tellico River is flowing slightly higher than normal and it is currently rising. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the 60’s during the warmest part of the day.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Flies that mimic terrestrial patterns are a good choice. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more. Dress to blend with the forest.
The lowland rivers are flowing low but most are at normal levels. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair to good. Fish the deeper pools and runs using streamers, poppers, foam floating flies or crayfish patterns. Fish the shaded areas if possible.
It looks like we will have bright sun every day through Friday. If you go fishing on the lakes, make it early or late when the sun is low. Cast to the dimly lit banks and cover with streamers or swimming nymphs. Poppers or foam floating flies may work so give them a try. When the sun is high, look for shaded areas to fish.
TVA and the Corps will begin generating later this morning or early afternoon at most dams. They are generating day and night at Norris and Wolf Creek dams. There is a long pause planned at South Holston Dam this afternoon. Check the TVA website generation schedules to plan your tailwater fishing day.
We will have sales representatives visiting the store this week. They will be showing us new products and Spring pre-season ordering programs. Raz Reid will be at the shop today. He represents Sage, Redington, Renzetti, Fishpond, Rio and other companies. It will be good to see Raz again.
The parking lot at our shop has been sealed and is now completely open for you. August is the best month of the year to do this because there are less customers visiting the store. The job was done in phases so we had some parking available during the several day process. Winter would be better for us but it can’t be done when it is cold.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
