Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 63.1 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s and a chance for thunderstorms late this afternoon.
It looks like we are going to get some rain over the weekend, through Monday. Showers are likely Saturday, Sunday and Monday. It will be cooler. Expect a high temperature in the low to 80’s tomorrow, and in the upper 70’s Sunday and Monday.
Little River is flowing at 65.9 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.43 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 82 cfs. The water temperature is 68.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal this morning. Some are flowing close to normal. Normal is low in early September. This may change over the weekend. Water temperatures will be warm in the lower elevations today. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. A dry and dropper rig is a good combination. Terrestrial flies like beetles, ants and inchworms are good choices.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair to good. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers and crayfish imitations.
Fly fishing on the lakes is fair. It will be sunny today with calm winds. Fishing will be best early or late. Hit the banks and cover with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Allow your flies to descend deep and falling further during a slow retrieve. If that is not working, try a different retrieve. Poppers and foam floating flies may work when the sun is low or in shaded areas. I think you will do best fishing deep.
TVA or the Corps of Engineers will be generating all day at Norris, South Holston and Wolf Creek dams. There are generation schedules tailwater anglers can work with but in most cases, you will need to go early and choose the right places to fish until the water comes up. If you are boating you can also work with some of the schedules.
This may be a good fishing Labor Day Weekend. It will be cooler and hopefully wetter.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
