Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:58 am, the temperature is 68.2 degrees.
Today will be cooler, with a high temperature near 80 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms are likely today and there is a chance for thunderstorms through tonight. Expect rain tomorrow. Thunderstorms are possible. The chance for rain is 90%. The high temperature will be around 80 degrees on Labor Day.
Periods of heavy rain are expected from this morning through Monday, which may result in flooding. According to the National Weather Service, rain through tomorrow is expected to average between one and three inches. We are under a flood watch today through tomorrow. Sometimes that means it will happen. Other times it does not.
Little River is flowing at 78.1 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.50 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 92 cfs. The water temperature is 69.6 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near normal. Normal this time of the year is low. One exception is Tellico River, which rose above normal overnight, but is receding now.
If you go fishing today, watch for quickly rising water. If you see stained water where you are fishing, there is a chance the river will rise quickly. Get out of the stream on the side where you can get back to your vehicle.
I talked to several returning anglers in the shop yesterday. I heard good fishing reports and some that were not good. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Flies that mimic terrestrial patterns are good choices this time of the year.
Most lowland rivers are flowing low but that may change soon. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with streamers, crayfish patterns, poppers or foam floating flies. Watch for rising water.
Fly fishing on the lakes is fair at best. If you go today, you will likely get wet so be prepared. The larger gamefish will probably be holding deep so weighted streamers or swimming nymphs will probably work best. It should be overcast today, so there is a chance poppers or foam floating flies will work if top water fishing is what you prefer.
Check the TVA website and you will find some tailwater fishing opportunities. Generation will begin later this morning at many dams so plan to go early. Pick a good spot to launch your boat or wade and fish until the water comes up.
We were very busy at the shop yesterday. Traffic was fairly heavy in Townsend. Since rain is expected today, we will likely be busy again.
As usual, I spent the day greeting and helping customers in the fly tying department on the second level of the shop. We have a large and well stocked fly tying department. Yesterday, two customers were commenting on the great selection. It was their first time shopping in the department. I asked if this was their first time in our store. Both said they had been in the store but did not know the fly tying department existed. Another customer told me the same thing Friday. I have heard it many times.
I had a nice large 2’ x 3’ 2-sided sign made about 3 years ago, mounted in a wood frame that reads, “Please Visit our Fly Tying Department Upstairs”. It is located on the floor near the entrance to the shop.
I am off today but tomorrow I’m going to move that sign to a different location and maybe that will help.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
