Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:58 am, the temperature is 69.4 degrees.
During the past 24 hours, 1.08 inches of rain fell at the Knoxville Airport with a personal weather station in Townsend reporting .58 inches.
Showers with possible thunderstorms will continue today. Heavy rain is possible and we are under a “Flood Watch” throughout the day. The high temperature will be in the upper 70’s. Rain is likely every day this week through the weekend. High temperatures each day will be in the low 80’s.
Heavy rain missed most of Great Smoky Mountains National Park yesterday and overnight. There were some strong storms in the area, mostly to the west of the Park.
Little River is flowing at 76.3 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.49 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 95 cfs. The water temperature is 69.8 degrees.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near normal which is low. Little Pigeon River is currently rising. What happens today depends on how much rain we get and where it occurs. Today may be like yesterday, with no heavy rain affecting the streams. Or, it could be different.
I would fish today in a middle elevation stream where the water is cooler. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. If it is raining while you are fishing, nymphs might be your best fly choices. Watch for stained and rising water.
Lowland rivers are flowing low at the moment but some may rise later. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair. It will be overcast today, which is a good condition. Fish the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or crayfish patterns.
This may be a fair to good lake fishing day due to the overcast conditions. Normally, the lakes would be crowded with pleasure boaters but that may not be the case today due to the expected rain. If you go, fish the banks and cover with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. I would try poppers or foam floating flies to see what happens. Don’t forget your rain gear.
If you are hoping to fish on a tailwater today, you have many choices. You should go early. The Corps and TVA will begin generating at most dams later this morning or early afternoon. Check the TVA website generation schedules to plan your tailwater fishing day.
It is raining at our house right now. Weather radar indicates light rain is falling in parts of the Smokies but missing the majority of the Park. The radar also indicates there is more on the way from the south.
Visitors will be packing and driving home today after enjoying the Labor Day weekend. We will see a lot of campers heading home, driving through town toward Maryville. We will be open today and I expect we will be fairly busy.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
