Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 63.0 degrees.
It will be partly sunny today with a high temperature in the low to middle 80’s. Showers are likely overnight with possible thunderstorms mixed in. Showers are likely Saturday and thunderstorms are possible. The high temperature will be around 80 degrees. The chance for rain continues Saturday night. Expect rain at times again on Sunday with a high temperature in the low 80’s.
There is no mention of heavy rain in the forecast through the weekend. That may mean the rain showers will be scattered. Fishing may be very good in the mountains this weekend.
Little River is flowing at 112 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.66 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 86 cfs. The water temperature is 66.5 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing higher than normal, though most are flowing fairly close to median flow.
Today will be a good fishing day. It should be cloudy at times. Streams are flowing higher than normal but normal in early September is low.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. I talked to a couple of customers yesterday who fished near Elkmont. One used a dry and dropper rig and had a slow day. The other used a weighted nymph rig and did better.
The lowland rivers are flowing somewhat higher than normal. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair to good. Fish the deeper pools and runs. Try poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns.
Fishing on the lakes is fair. Winds will be light today and it should be overcast often. You will probably do best using weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Allow them to sink deep as you slowly retrieve. Poppers and foam floating flies may work too, especially if it is overcast.
In September, I have always done well fishing on the lakes using small 2” threadfin shad patterns, fishing along the wooded banks where trees have fallen in the water, creating cover. My favorite pattern is a Puglisi Threadfin Shad. I tie them on a #4 egg hook. They look like little tarpon flies. Let them sink and twitch, like they are injured or dying.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are lowering the lakes to create water storage capacity. The Summer recreation boating season officially ended after Labor Day. There are generation schedules you can work with below some dams, especially early today. Visit the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you have.
Due to Monday being a holiday, most of our suppliers were closed. I placed our weekly fly tying material and tool orders on Tuesday this week, which puts me out of sync. I normally order every Monday. The orders will arrive today and tomorrow. I am ready and anxiously waiting.
September has been very busy at the shop, compared to the first week of the month last year. The same was true in August. Sales and transaction counts are up. Last year, these two months were slow for some reason.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
