Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 66.0 degrees.
Light rain is falling at our home near Townsend. Rain is predicted to continue through the day with a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. Rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch are possible. There is the potential for heavy rainfall in some thunderstorms. We have a low chance for rain tonight. The high temperature today will be in the middle to upper 70’s.
There is a moderate chance for showers and scattered thunderstorms tomorrow with a high in the low 80’s. We have an elevated chance for thunderstorms tomorrow night.
Little River is flowing at 96.0 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.59 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 84 cfs. The water temperature is 66.5 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing very close to normal this morning. Most are flowing a little higher than normal. Normal in early September is low.
Fish the broken water where the trout are hiding. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Try a dry and dropper rig. Flies that mimic terrestrial insects are good choices. If you are not having much luck with the dry and dropper, switch to a weighted nymph rig. Or, begin with a weighted nymph rig. That may be your best option today.
The lowland rivers are flowing low but most are at higher than normal water levels for September. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with streamers, nymphs, crayfish patterns, poppers or foam floating flies.
This may be a good lake fishing day due to the predicted cloud cover. On the other hand, it may be windy in some thunderstorms later. There is a 90% chance you will get wet, so be prepared with rain gear. Fish the banks and cover with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. You might also catch fish using poppers or foam floating flies.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are offering tailwater anglers some fishing opportunities today. Generation at most dams will begin later this morning or this afternoon. Check the TVA website to plan your tailwater fishing day.
Monday, and through next week, we will be blessed with cooler temperatures at night. Lows next week should be in the upper 50’s to low 60’s. Fishing in the low elevations will improve. We are all looking forward to that.
