Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:05 am, the temperature is 68 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature around 80 degrees. Rain is likely this morning. We have a chance for rain and thunderstorms this afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms are likely tonight.
Cooler temperatures will arrive tomorrow with a chance for more showers. The high temperature is predicted to be in the middle 70’s. We can expect clearing later tomorrow. The low temperature tomorrow night will be in the low to middle 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 109 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.65 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 85 cfs. The water temperature is 66.0 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing slightly above normal. Normal this time of the year is low. Anglers are catching trout on dry flies and nymphs. Weighted nymph rigs are working well from what I heard yesterday and Friday.
Lowland rivers are flowing low but still higher than median flow. With the possibility of more rain today and tonight, we may see some of these rivers rise to better fishing levels this week. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair. Fish the deeper pools and runs with streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns. Try poppers and foam floating flies. It will be overcast today, which is a good fishing condition.
Overcast skies offer us good fishing days on the lakes and today will be one. Winds will be calm today. Fish the banks and cover using weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Let your flies sink deep and retrieve slowly. You may also catch bass and panfish on poppers or foam floating flies. Give them a try.
There are some tailwater fishing opportunities available for you today. Generation schedules vary. The Corps and TVA will be generating later today at some dams, and earlier at others. Check the TVA website generation schedules to plan your tailwater fishing day.
Cooler temperatures, especially at night, are in our immediate future and lasting through September 25th. That is something we are all looking forward to. The leaves will be turning soon. Fall is not far off.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
