Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 54 degrees.
Today will be sunny again, with a high temperature in the low 80’s and a low tonight in the upper 50’s. Tomorrow will be almost identical. The weekend will be sunny and slightly warmer.
Little River is flowing at 89.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.56 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. The water temperature is 61.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are receding but still flowing slightly higher than normal. Normal is low in September. Water temperatures are very good at all elevations and within the trout’s preferred range.
Trout are hiding near cover or broken water in these low flow conditions. Dress to blend with the forest and do everything possible to stay hidden from the fish. Dry flies will work. A dry and dropper combination is a good tactic. Or, fish weighted nymph rigs.
Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair in the lowland rivers, which are also flowing low. Fish in the deeper pools and runs. Streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns are good fly choices. Poppers and foam floating flies might work.
Fly fishing on the lakes will be best early and late when the sun is low. Cast to the shaded banks and cover using weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Allow them to sink deep and retrieve slowly.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers are lowering the lakes by generating for long periods. There are some tailwater fishing options today. In most cases you will need to go early, pick the right spots to fish based on the predicted generation schedules, and fish until the water rises. Check the TVA website to see if you can work with their generation schedule on your favorite tailwater.
Daniel and I met with Chase, who is a new sales rep in our region. He works for Umpqua, Echo, Lamson and other companies. I really like Chase. He and his wife live in Chattanooga.
Dave Anderson will be placing our Umpqua fly orders this month, to be delivered next year. He buys flies from several companies. Our fly selection is huge. What you don’t see are the flies that are back-stocked. Dave does a great job and the fly department is performing very well.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
