Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:24 am, the temperature is 56.3 degrees.
Today will be sunny and warm with a high temperature in the low 80’s and a low tonight in the upper 50’s. No rain is expected today. Tomorrow will be almost identical to today, but slightly warmer, in the middle 80’s during the day and in the middle to upper 60’s at night.
Little River is flowing at exactly median flow for this date. Flow is currently 71 cfs or 1.46 feet on the gauge. Median flow is 71 cfs. The water temperature is 62.8 degrees this morning.
All streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing right at normal or median flow this morning. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range.
Normal flows are low in September. Anglers I talked to at the shop yesterday reported fair to good fishing. Due to the low water conditions, concentrate your efforts on the broken water in plunge pools, deep runs or pockets in riffles where the trout are hiding from predators. Nymphs will work for sure. Dry flies will too. Try a dry and dropper combination or a weighted nymph rig. Dress to blend with the forest to help avoid being seen by the spooky trout.
The lowland rivers are flowing low. Fishing for smallmouth bass and other species is fair. Fish the deep pools and runs. Streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns will produce strikes and catch fish. They may take poppers and foam floating flies.
Fish early or late on the lakes when the sun is low and the banks are dimly lit. Fish deep with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. You may catch smaller bass and panfish on poppers or foam floating flies.
There will be pauses in the generation at most dams this morning. TVA and the Corps will begin generating at different times today, mostly in the morning. If you are boating you have more options. Check the TVA website to see exactly when the generation will begin on your favorite tailwater to make your fishing plans for the day.
I am off from work today and have no plans other than sleeping later than usual, which I did. We were busy at the shop yesterday. September has been a very good month for us so far.
It is going to feel like August for a few days this week. The predicted high temperature Wednesday is in the low 90’s. It will be cooler Thursday and through the weekend. The chance for rain is low this week.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
