Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:47 am, the temperature is 65 degrees.
Today will be warm with a high temperature in the upper 80’s and a low tonight in the low 60’s. It will be hot tomorrow. The high is expected to be in the low 90’s. Thursday will be a little cooler with a low chance for showers and thunderstorms.
Little River is flowing at 65.9 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.43 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 73 cfs. The water temperature is 65.1 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing very close to normal. Normal in September is low. Water temperatures are fairly cool this morning, but with the expected warm to hot days ahead, we will see the temperatures rise. A cold front will move in Friday. Water temperatures will fall again.
Fishing is fair to good in the mountains. Trout are hiding in broken water or near cover. Fish the pockets, plunge pools and deep runs. The fish are taking dry flies and nymphs. Try a dry fly with a nymph dropper or a weighted nymph rig. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more.
Fishing for bass and other species in the lowland rivers is fair. Fish the deeper pools with streamers or crayfish patterns. You may do well using poppers or foam floating flies, especially in the shaded areas of the rivers.
I talked to a couple of lake fishermen yesterday and others recently. Most agree, bass are holding in deeper water. Large bluegill and shellcrackers are doing the same thing. You will do best fishing early or late when the sun is low. Weighted streamers or swimming nymphs are good fly choices. Allow your flies to sink deep and retrieve slowly. You could try poppers or foam floating flies but you will likely catch smaller fish.
If you plan to fish on a tailwater today, you have probably checked the generation schedules already. TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams starting this morning. With careful planning you may be able to squeeze in some tailwater fishing time. If you are boating, you have more options for longer floats.
They are lowering the lakes to create more water storage capacity. That is being done with longer periods of generation and in some cases, sluicing.
Fall-like weather conditions are in our near future, beginning Friday and possibly lasting through early October. We will enjoy highs in the 70’s with lows in the 40’s and 50’s. We also have a better chance for rain, with a higher chance Sunday and Monday.
I decided to stay home from work today. Paula and I are going to wash windows. I usually work 6 days a week, but not this week.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
