Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 56 degrees.
It will be sunny and cool today with a high temperature in the middle 70’s, falling to the middle 50’s tonight. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy with a high in the upper 70’s and a low in the low 60’s. Sunday will be more of the same with a mix of clouds and sun and a high in the upper 70’s. We do have a fair chance for rain Sunday. I hope that happens.
Little River is flowing low at 51.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.37 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 75 cfs. The water temperature is 63.7 degrees this morning and falling.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal. Normal is low in September. Water temperatures are falling, which will continue through the weekend.
Fishing is fair in the Smokies. Some anglers say they are catching trout. Dennis and Jimmy fished in the high elevations yesterday and did pretty well. I talked to another customer who fished on the Middle Prong of Little River and did not catch one trout. David fished on the same stream evening before last and did well.
Trout will be holding in the deeper and choppy water, hiding from predators. Fish the plunge pools, pockets and runs. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. I think weighted nymph rigs are working best, from what I have heard.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Fishing for smallmouth bass and other species is fair. Fish in the deeper pools with streamers or crayfish patterns. Poppers and foam floating flies might work.
Fishing on the lakes with fly gear is fair. I would definitely go early or late today, when the sun is low. Larger fish will likely be holding in deep water. Weighted streamers or swimming nymphs would be my fly choices today, though I would try poppers and swimming nymphs to see what happens.
TVA will be generating at Norris Dam all day. The same is true at Wolf Creek Dam. They will be generating at a lot of the dams starting this morning at most. Tailwater anglers may be able to work with some of the generation schedules. Check the TVA website to see what your options are.
