Little River is flowing at 45.4 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.33 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 81 cfs. On this date in 2007, flow in Little River at the Townsend Gauge was 22.9 cfs. The water temperature is 60.4 degrees this morning.
If you look at the US Drought Monitor by CLICKING HERE, click on this region then on the State of Tennessee. You will see we have become abnormally dry in our county (Blount), (third from the bottom) along the Smoky Mountains.
However, rainfall totals for the month of September at the Knoxville Airport are almost normal. Normal on this date is 2.64 inches and actual at this point in the month is 2.42 inches. The Knoxville Airport is also located in Blount County, not in Knox County.
Sevier County is totally normal on the Drought Monitor. Little Pigeon River in Sevier County is flowing right at normal.
Other streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing below normal with the exception of Davidson River and Little Pigeon River.
Water temperatures are good. Anglers are catching trout on nymphs and dry flies. Fish the broken water in pockets, plunge pools and runs. Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice. You can vary the depth of your flies as needed.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Fishing for smallmouth bass and other species is fair. Fish in the deeper pools with streamers or crayfish patterns. It should be overcast this morning and at other times during the day so poppers or foam floating flies may work.
Lake fishing with fly tackle is fair. It will be overcast at times today which is a good lake fishing condition. Weighted streamers or swimming nymphs will probably work best. Allow your flies to descend deep and retrieve slowly.
There are breaks in the generation at most dams early today offering tailwater anglers several options. Generation will resume later this morning or early afternoon at most dams. Visit the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing opportunities you have today.
Fall has arrived and it feels like it. The long term weather forecast indicates cool days and nights each day through October 8th.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
