Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:40 am, the temperature is 56 degrees.
We have a good chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms today and tonight. The chance is 60%. Today’s high temperature will be in the middle 70’s with a low tonight in the middle 50’s.
It will be sunny tomorrow with a high in the middle 70’s and a low tomorrow night in the middle 40’s. Now that is going to feel like Fall.
Little River is flowing low at 45.4 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.33 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 81 cfs. The water temperature is 60.8 degrees this morning.
You may remember this date in 2007, when Little River was flowing at 21.7 cfs. You don’t remember? Neither do I. I had to look it up.
Streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing lower than normal with two exceptions, Little Pigeon River and Davidson River. These conditions will hopefully change by tomorrow morning. Water temperatures are very good.
Fishing remains “Fair” because anglers still report catching trout in the Smokies. They are likely fishing the broken choppy water in plunge pools, pockets and runs where the trout are hiding. I think weighted nymphs rigs are a good choice. You can vary the depth with each cast.
Most lowland rivers are flowing low of course. That may change soon too. Fish the deep pools with streamers, crayfish patterns, poppers or foam floating flies for smallmouth bass and other species.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers is fair and maybe better. Many of these rivers are larger and deeper so fishing may be good. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range in the low elevations. Weighted nymph rigs or streamers will probably work best.
Fishing on a lake today may be ideal due to the expected overcast conditions. I think weighted streamers and swimming nymphs are your best choices. Poppers and foam floating flies may work too. Watch out for approaching thunderstorms with strong winds.
There will be pauses in the generation at many dams today, offering tailwater anglers schedules that are workable, especially early. TVA will be generating at Cherokee Dam all day starting early this morning. They will be holding off at some dams until this afternoon. Check the TVA website generation schedules to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
Today is my day off this week and that has become my habit. You may have noticed I sleep later on Sundays lately. Since our fly tying material and tool suppliers are turning orders around quickly, I changed my ordering day to Monday and go to work very early to make sure our orders are submitted before they open for business. All of those suppliers are in time zones to our west except one in Pennsylvania. Sunday is normally a busy day at the shop. Now, my Monday morning orders include what was sold on Sunday.
I can also stay up later Saturday night to watch college football games. Paula and I love watching college football. The Tennessee/Florida game yesterday was exciting for fans pulling for both schools. Both teams played well.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
