Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 58 degrees.
A storm moved though last night bringing hail and rain with a total of .35 inches in Townsend. Dense fog is predicted this morning.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 70’s and a low tonight in the middle to upper 40’s. Tomorrow will be sunny and cooler with a high in the upper 60’s and a low in the low to middle 40’s. It will continue to be cool through the week, with a chance for rain this weekend.
Little River is rising. Flow is currently 60.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.42 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 77 cfs. The water temperature is 62.2 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the Smokies were affected by the scattered storms last night. Little Pigeon River is receding after a sharp rise. Other streams were not affected at all. None are flowing high this morning. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range at all elevations.
Fishing is fair to good. Trout will take dry flies or nymphs. Fish the broken choppy water in plunge pools, pockets and runs. Fishing with a weighted nymph rig is a good tactic, giving you more control over the depth you present your flies. Dry flies may work too so give them a try.
Most lowland rivers exiting the mountains and flowing through the valleys are at low levels for the most part. Fishing for stocked trout is fair to good. Fish for trout in the deeper pools and runs with weighted nymph rigs.
Streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns are good choices in the lower sections for smallmouth bass, rock bass and other species.
Lake fishing with fly tackle is fair. The sun will be bright today so you will likely do best early or late. Weighted streamers and swimming nymphs are probably your best fly choices. Larger fish are probably holding deep, depending on the surface water temperature in the lake you are fishing.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating all day at some dams with breaks today at others. Check the TVA website to see what tailwater opportunities you have today.
The long term weather forecast indicates we will enjoy cool Fall temperatures each day through October 10th. The chance for rain is fairly low during the period. October is typically a dry month in the Southern Appalachians.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
