Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 40 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the middle to upper 60’s and a low tonight in the low 40’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 70’s and a low in the middle 40’s.
Rain will move into the area late Friday. The chance for rain Friday night is high. Rain will continue to fall Saturday and Sunday. One weather website is predicting heavy rain, with accumulations this weekend amounting to 1 to 3 inches due to the remnants of Hurricane Ian. It may also be windy in the high elevations this weekend.
Little River is flowing at 41.0 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.30 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 91 cfs. The water temperature is 56.1 degrees and falling.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing low. Water temperatures are falling this morning. The water temperature at Cataloochee Creek in the higher elevations is currently 50 degrees.
Fishing will be best today in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. You may want to wait a while before going fishing this morning, until the falling temperatures bottom out and begin to rise. Weighted nymphs will probably work best early. Dry flies may produce later today.
The lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains are low. Due to the ideal water temperatures in these rivers, fishing for stocked trout is good. Weighted nymph rigs or streamers are good fly choices for stocked trout.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and warmwater species is fair. Fish in the deeper pools with nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
Lake fishing will be best early or late when the sun is low. Cast to the banks or cover with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Allow your flies to sink deep and retrieve slowly. It may be slightly breezy today.
You may find tailwater fishing opportunities below some dams today and not at others. Generation times vary greatly. Visit the TVA website to see if you can work with the schedules on your favorite tailwater.
If you are planning a fishing trip to the mountains this weekend, watch the weather forecasts that may change depending on the path of the storm.
I hope all of our friends and customers are going to be OK in Florida and other coastal states. I talked to one customer in Sanibel Monday via email. She said things are a bit crazy down there. She and her husband are in the fly fishing business. We have a lot of customers and friends in Florida. Take care and be safe.
Have a safe day and thank you for being here with us.
