Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 47 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature near or a little above 70 degrees and a low tonight in the middle 40’s. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high near 70 degrees and a low in the low 50’s. We have a chance for rain showers later tomorrow. Rain is likely tomorrow night.
Showers are likely Saturday and Sunday. We will be on the outer edge of Hurricane Ian. I see no mention of heavy rain on the weather websites this weekend but the track of the storm could change along with the forecast.
Little River is flowing at 38.2 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.28 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 89 cfs. Little River was flowing at 18.4 cfs on this date in 2007. The water temperature is 54.7 degrees this morning.
All streams in the mountains are flowing low and they will continue to slowly recede today and tomorrow. Water temperatures are perfect in the low to middle elevations. The streams are cold in the high elevations with water temperatures dipping into the 40’s this morning.
If you go today, fish in the lower elevations. Trout will be concentrated and hiding in the broken choppy water. Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice early. Dry flies may produce later today. The water temperatures are favorable but the low water is not.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Fishing for stocked trout is good. Nymphs and streamers will work best for you.
Further downstream, fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and warmwater species is fair. Fish in the pools with streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns.
Lake fishing will be best early or late when the sun is low. At least for now, the larger fish will likely be deep. I would be using weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Good streamer choices are Wooly Buggers and shad imitations. Weighted flies that mimic a damsel fly is a good swimming nymph pattern. Allow your flies to sink deep and retrieve slowly.
Tailwater anglers have a few options today. TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams later this morning or early afternoon. Take a close look at the generation schedules on the TVA website to make your plans.
The long term weather forecast indicates we will enjoy Fall-like temperatures through the middle of October. What we need is rain. We should get some rain this weekend.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
