Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 52 degrees.
We got under a tenth of an inch of rain in Townsend overnight. That’s it!
We have a chance for showers this afternoon, with a high temperature in the upper 50’s and a low tonight in the upper 40’s. Tomorrow will be cloudy, with a high in the low 60’s and a slight chance for a rain shower.
Little River is flowing at 41 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.30 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. The water temperature is 56.1 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal. Normal in early October is low. Cataloochee Creek is rising almost to the normal mark which it may surpass. Davidson River rose slightly, and is currently flowing a little over normal for this date.
The streams may be low but the water temperatures are perfect. Fish in the larger low elevation rivers today where there is more water depth. Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice. “High sticking” without a strike indicator will allow you to vary the depth of your flies as needed. Dry flies may work as well.
You may spot some brown trout out in the open preparing to spawn. You may not catch them, but they are fun to watch.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Trout are stocked in some of these rivers and fishing for them should be good. Streamers or nymphs are good fly choices.
If you are targeting smallmouth bass or warmwater species, fish in the deeper pools with streamers or crayfish patterns.
This may be a good lake fishing day. It will be overcast, which is a good lake fishing condition. Winds are predicted to be light. Cast to the banks and structure with streamers or swimming nymphs. Let your flies sink deep and retrieve slowly.
Check the TVA website and you will find generation schedules you can work with on some of the tailwaters. You may need to go early below some dams and pick the right spots to launch your boat or wade.
We had a very good September at the shop. I can’t wait to run the sales number comparisons this morning. I will be receiving some fly tying material and tool orders today from Umpqua, Firehole and Semperfli while also helping customers who are visiting the fly tying department.
A huge order from Orvis arrived Thursday. That is probably a pre-season order placed this Spring for Fall delivery. The shop is stocked very well right now. We will probably be busy this weekend.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
