Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 46 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the low 70’s and a low tonight in the low 40’s. Tomorrow will be almost identical to today, but slightly warmer tomorrow night. It will be sunny every day through the end of the week, with no rain predicted.
Little River is flowing at 57.1 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.40 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. The water temperature is 54.7 degrees this morning at the Townsend gauge.
Streams in the mountains are flowing low. Little Pigeon River is the only one I found that is flowing above normal. Normal in early October is low. Water temperatures are good, even in the low elevations.
I would fish in the larger low elevation rivers were the water is deeper. Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice. Trout may also be taking dry flies. Fish in the broken water where most trout are hiding. You may see brown trout in the open water, preparing to spawn. Nymphs and possibly streamers may provoke strikes from the browns.
Dress to blend with the forest and stay hidden from the trout.
Fishing for stocked trout in the rivers flowing out of the National Park is fair to good. Higher flows would be better, but we probably won’t see that for a while. Water temperatures are fine. The stocked trout can be caught on streamers, nymphs, eggs or squirmy worms.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers is fair. Try streamers that mimic baitfish, Wooly Buggers or crayfish patterns. Most bass will be cruising in the deep pools and runs. They might take top water flies so give them a try, especially in shaded areas.
Lake fishing with fly tackle is fair. Fishing will be best early or late when the sun is low. The larger gamefish will likely be found in deeper water. Cast weighted baitfish patterns, Wooly Buggers or swimming nymphs to the banks or cover. Allow your flies to sink deeper and use a slow retrieve to keep them there. Fish the shaded banks when the sun is higher.
There are some tailwater fishing opportunities today based on the predicted generation schedules I just viewed. TVA and the Corps will be generating almost all day at other dams. Look at the options you have today on the TVA website to plan your tailwater fishing day.
I sent an email to one of our customers in Fort Myers, Florida yesterday and was relieved to hear back from her almost immediately. She and her husband are fine. Their power and water are on again. She said some of their friends lost everything. The destruction to Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel Island and other areas in Florida are beyond belief. The loss of life from the hurricane is so saddening.
She ties saltwater and bass flies for shops in the area. He is a fly fishing guide and instructor. I have worked with her, supplying fly tying materials for her business. We will be sending her more materials this week.
