Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 41 degrees.
We have plenty of sunny and dry days in store for us this week. No rain is predicted through the weekend. The high temperature today will be in the low 70’s with a low tonight in the middle 40’s. Tomorrow and Friday will be warmer with a high in the middle 70’s. It will be cooler this weekend.
Little River is flowing at 45.5 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.33 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 75 cfs. The water temperature is 54.0 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing low. Most are flowing lower than normal. We expect low water in October. Water temperatures are good, even in the low elevations. I would plan to fish in the larger rivers in the lower elevations. Fishing for trout is fair. Concentrate on the broken choppy water where the trout are hiding. Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice. Trout may take dry flies too.
Fishing for stocked trout outside Great Smoky Mountains National Park is fair to good. The rivers are flowing low. Fish in the deeper pools and runs using nymphs, streamers, squirmy worms and egg patterns.
Further downstream in the lowland rivers, fishing for smallmouth bass is fair. Fish in the deeper pools and runs. Streamers and crayfish patterns are good fly choices.
Fishing on the lakes with fly fishing gear will be best early and late when the sun is low. Cast weighted streamers or swimming nymphs to the dimly lit or shaded banks. Let your flies sink deep and retrieve slowly to keep them deep. Winds will be light today.
TVA and the Corps will be generating pretty much all day at most dams. There are breaks in the generation at a few, including Wilbur, Center Hill and South Holston dams. The impoundments are being lowered for the Winter to create water storage capacity now that the recreation boating season is over.
Leaves are turning in the lower elevations. It looks and feels like Fall. The long term weather forecast through October 19th indicates the cool days and nights will continue. Right now, rain is in the forecast late next week.
We are seeing more young families in the shop. It is Fall Break and kids are out of school.
What we are enjoying now is good hiking, biking, camping and fishing weather.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
