Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 50 degrees.
It will be warm today with a high temperature in the middle 70’s. There is a chance for showers today with thunderstorms possible this afternoon. It will also be windy today. Showers and thunderstorms are likely tonight. Rainfall amounts between a quarter and a half of an inch are possible.
There is a chance for showers and thunderstorms tomorrow with a high temperature around 70 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 42.4 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.25 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 76 cfs. The water temperature is 54.1 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing very low. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range, especially in the lower elevations.
Stay hidden from the trout. Wear muted clothing to blend with the forest. Use light tippet sizes. Smaller nymphs and dry flies will probably work best. Fish the choppy water where most trout are hiding. I would choose a low elevation larger river to fish.
Trout are stocked in many of the low elevation rivers and they are flowing low for now. Stocked trout will be holding in the deeper pools and runs. Nymphs, streamers, egg patterns, midge pupa, Green Weenies and squirmy worms are good fly choices.
If you plan to fish for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers, streamers and crayfish patterns are good flies to use. You might try poppers or foam floating flies. They could work for you. Smallies will be holding in the deeper pools.
If the forecast for wind today turns out to be true, this is not a great day to be fishing on the lakes. Wind gusts to 20 miles per hour are predicted. If you go, use weighted streamers and swimming nymphs.
TVA and the Corps will be generating almost all day at most dams in our region. There are some exceptions. Check the predicted flows at Center Hill and South Holston dams. There may be other options for tailwater fishing in the area.
We are all hoping for rain. It appears we may finally get some, today, tonight, tomorrow morning, Sunday and Sunday night. We even have a chance for rain Monday morning.
We are very busy at the shop. This has been an unusually busy late Summer and Fall. Our store is stocked very well. That helps for sure.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
