Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 58 degrees.
We finally got some rain. .79 inches fell in Townsend overnight, while other areas to our north and south got less to none.
There is a low chance for rain early this morning, before clearing later today. The high temperature will be in the low 60’s, dropping to the upper 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be partly sunny and dry with a high in the middle 40’s and a low in the upper 20’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 71 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.42 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 79 cfs. the river is rising. The water temperature is 58.1 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the mountains are rising while others are not. Cataloochee Creek is rising quickly. Oconaluftee River and Little Pigeon River are rising. Tellico River and Davidson River have remained unchanged.
Some streams could be temporarily stained but they should clear soon. Water temperatures are good in the low to middle elevations. Nymphs will work for sure. Dry flies may produce for you later today.
Some lowland rivers are flowing low though others are rising to above normal. It is possible you may find stained water in some rivers. If you are fishing for stocked trout, nymphs, midge pupa, streamers, egg patterns, green weenies or squirmy worms are good fly choices. If you are fishing for smallmouth bass or rock bass, try streamers or crayfish patterns.
It will likely be windy today. Winds are predicted to be 5 to 15 miles per hour with gusts up to 25 miles per hour. I would go lake fishing early while the sky is overcast. Cast to the banks with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. When and if the wind picks up, you may want to return to the ramp, pull out your boat, and go home. Or, you may want to just forget fishing on a lake today.
TVA and the Corps will be firing up the generators at many dams early this morning. They will be generating later this morning at other dams and there is no generation planned at others. Check the TVA website to see the generation schedules and hopefully plan to fish on a tailwater today.
Be prepared for some cold nights this week. I will be draining the water system for our garden tonight and remove the chlorine filter until next Spring.
