Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 32 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the middle to upper 40’s and a low tonight in the upper 20’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 50’s and a low in the low 30’s.
It will be cold in the high elevations today. A high of 37 degrees is predicted at Newfound Gap. The high temperature at Mount LeConte will be in the middle to upper 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 81.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.48 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 74 cfs. The water temperature is 54.1 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River rose most of the day yesterday but the river peaked a couple of hours ago and is now flowing at 226 cfs or 1.60 feet. Median flow for this date is 117 cfs.
Oconaluftee River and Cataloochee Creek have receded back to slightly below normal. Davidson River and Tellico River were unaffected by rain night before last.
Water temperatures are chilly in the high elevations but fine in the low to middle elevations. Though some streams are flowing slightly higher than normal, normal is low in October. Nymphs are a good choice early today and trout may be taking dry flies later as the streams begin to warm. They won’t warm much today. Fish the broken water where most trout are hiding. You may see brown trout out in the open, in pools, preparing to spawn.
Fishing for stocked trout is fair to good in the streams flowing out of the mountains. Water temperatures are fine. Some rivers are now flowing higher than before. Nymphs and other sub-surface flies are good choices.
Fly fishing for smallmouth bass and rock bass is fair in the lowland rivers. Streamers and crayfish patterns should work best for you.
This could be a fair lake fishing day due to the cloud cover. It will be chilly and somewhat breezy, with winds predicted to be out of the northwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour. If you go, dress warm. Cast to the banks and cover with weighted streamers and swimming nymphs. Get your flies deep and keep them there by retrieving slowly with occasional pauses.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams all day. You might be able to work with the generation schedule at Center Hill Dam later. Check the TVA website to see if there are some tailwater opportunities today for you.
I’ll tell you what, it not only looks like Fall, it feels like Fall.
Doug from Foothills Mechanical is going to inspect our HVAC equipment tomorrow. He and his company do a great job for us at the shop and at our home. We have propane backup for all four of our heat and air units at the shop and almost a full tank of fuel, ready to go. I want the store to be warm and safe this winter.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
