Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:54 am, the temperature is 35 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the low 50’s, dropping to the low 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and a little warmer, with a high in the upper 50’s and a low in the middle 30’s. Friday will be sunny and warm with a high in the upper 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 50.1 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.30 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 82 cfs. The water temperature is 48.6 degrees and plunging downward.
Streams in the mountains are flowing low. Some are flowing near normal while others are quite a bit lower. Water temperatures are in the 40’s, even in the lowest elevations. Trout will be sluggish until the water warms to at least 50 degrees. If you go fishing in the mountains today, wait a while until the water warms. Fish in the low elevation streams where the water is warmer. Nymphs will work best for you.
Fishing for stocked trout in the rivers flowing out of the mountains may be slow early today due to the cold water temperatures. Go later. Nymphs, midge pupa, egg patterns or squirmy worms are good fly choices.
Smallmouth bass and rock bass fishing will be slow today in most lowland rivers, though there may be some improvement later as the water warms. Nymphs, hellgrammite patterns or crayfish imitations fished slow are probably your best fly options today.
This is not an ideal lake fishing day. It will be cold and possibly breezy. The wind will be out of the west at 5 to 10 miles per hour. If you go, hit the banks and cover with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Allow your flies to sink deep and retrieve slowly.
There are long periods of generation planned at some dams today, with long breaks and even no generation at a few. Check the TVA website to see what the generation schedules look like at your favorite tailwater. Check out South Holston Dam.
This cold snap is going away. It is going to be much warmer as the week progresses. We will enjoy a beautiful weekend with warm days and nights.
The Fall colors are pretty in the low elevations. Leaves are falling from the trees. Be careful walking along the stream banks. You will foul hook leaves while fishing which is annoying but something we are accustomed to.
For the first time since 2019, we are planning to hold our free fly tying demonstrations on Saturdays, beginning next month. I will be posting the schedule here this week and through the Winter.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
